The Discipline of Mechanical Engineering has six major research areas, namely Vehicle, Powertrain, Manufacturing, Mechanical Design, Robotics, and Micro/Nano Engineering.

Our research is targeted at the most urgent need for national development and the latest advancements in science and technology around the globe. Over the years, we have been engaged in various major research projects for different purposes and at different levels. The total research funding for 2015 was 345.46 million yuan (roughly $52 million), being the highest of the University, and 31.45% of which are dedicated to horizontal collaborations with enterprises. The per capita research funding in the last three years exceeds 2 million yuan/year (about $300 thousand/year). In the last five years more than 2,000 academic papers have been published, including 549 papers indexed by SCI (Science Citation Index), 900 papers indexed by EI (Engineering Index) and 28 papers are included in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators) Highly Cited Papers List. More than 301 patents have been authorized, and seven state awards and 33 provincial or ministerial level awards have been granted.

All through our many years of striving, key breakthroughs have been achieved in exploring major cutting edge scientific and technological issues, and we have shown our undisputed strength in areas of vehicle, electric vehicle, humanoid robot, difficult-to-machine materials processing, and laser micro/nano manufacturing.

(1) Vehicle: Dynamics and Control of Vehicles, Intelligent Vehicles, High Performance Structures, Vehicle System Integration & Optimization, Electric Vehicles, Big Data Mining and Analysis, Transportation.

(2) Powertrain: Advanced and Hybrid Transmission, Energy Conversion and Management, Hydraulic Drive, Electric Drive.

(3) Manufacturing: Digital Manufacturing, Advanced Machining, Metal Additive Manufacturing, Quality Detection & Monitoring, Industry Engineering.

(4) Mechanical Design: Micro Bearing, Lubrication and Wear, Engineered Surface Design, Contact Mechanics.

(5) Robotics: Kinetic Biomimetics, Bio-sensing and Interaction, Cybernetics and Systems Integration.

(6) Micro/Nano Engineering: the novel theories, methods and applications of ultrafast laser micro/nano fabrication, precise and micro manufacturing technology.
