  • 2nd National Information Literacy Awareness Day Beijing Institute of Technology 23rd April, 2019

    1.     INTRODUCTION

    On April 23, 2019, the "World Reading Day", Beijing Institute of Technology successfully held the "National Information Literacy Awareness Day". The theme of a serious activities during the "National Information Literacy Awareness Day" to promote the education of information literacy in higher education institutions and in society. This is an important activity undertaken by Beijing Institute of Technology in the EU Erasmus+ Higher education Capacity building project " Developing Trans-regional information Literacy for lifelong learning and the knowledge economy –DIREKT ".

    The objective of the project is to promote the level and quality of information literacy education in higher education institutions and the whole society in China, Russia and Kazakhstan, to develop information literacy curriculum and courses, to establish an online education platform, and to develop an action guide for information Literacy Education.

    April 23 is "World Reading Day", Beijing Institute of Technology, together with Northwestern Polytechnic University and Nanjing University of Science and Technology jointly organized the "National Information Literacy Awareness Day" theme activities in Beijing, Xi’an and Nanjing. In the libraries in both Zhongguancun Campus and Liangxiang Campus, exhibition, seminar, and workshop of Information Literacy were organized.

     

    2.     OBJECTIVES

    The objective of the National Informational Literacy Awareness Day:

    • “National Information Literacy Awareness Day” held in CH, RF, KZ involving the participation of all primary, secondary, and university educational institutes on an agreed day and running for 10 years.
    • This involves active student participation of Universities, National and Public Libraries, Student Unions, Teacher unions with the support of the Education Ministries, NGO’s.

    • Academic, and administrative staffs of university
    • National and university Libraries
    • Librarians of national and university libraries
    • Representatives of Ministry of Education of China

    4.     EVENTS

    Opening ceremony of National Information Literacy Awareness Day

    Director of BIT library, Office of Undergraduate education, vice director of Office of International Affairs of BIT, and librarians, academic staff and students from School of Mechanical Engineering attended the opening ceremony of 2nd national information literacy awareness day in BIT.

    Dr. Xu Zhang presented the DIREKT project. Prof. Huang, director of Library, made a speech on education of information literacy and library services in BIT library. Then participants had a discussion on the issue of information literacy education in BIT. Topics included avoiding plagiarism, information searching and evaluation, academic writing, services provided by library, curriculum in Engineering majors, etc.

    Discussion and Debate on Information Literacy

    A discussion and debate on Information Literacy was organized. Students from the School of Mechanical Engineering participated the seminar to discuss the status of information literacy of college students in China. Means to improve information literacy were discussed.

    An online database resource exhibition by world-known database companies, Clarivate Analytics, Springer Nature, Elsevier, EBSCO, SAGE, was held during the National Information Awareness Day.

    Mr. Padraig Kirby and Brian O'Donnell, from the Limerick Institute of Technology, project coordinator in Ireland, participated in the opening ceremony and student seminars of the project as project observers.

     

     

    The successful holding of this event has promoted the understanding of information literacy among college students, university teachers and the whole society, and promoted the popularization of information literacy education in China.

    National media, China Youth Network, Beijing Headline, reported this event.

     

     

     

     

    6.     PROMOTION AND MARKETING of NAD

    T-shirts, project leaflet, pens with project logo, and notebooks were prepared for promotion of all NAD activities.

     

    7.     CONCLUSION

    The second National Information Literacy Awareness Day was successfully held in BIT. With the experiences we had in 2018, the NAD in 2019 is successful in having more impact to students and staff members. There were more students participating the exhibition, public workshops.
