Erasmus+ Project Working Group Meeting and ESP Training in BIT

Beijing Institute of Technology has won a three-year Erasmus+ project - Developing Trans-regional information literacy for lifelong learning and the knowledge economy (DIREKT), funded by EU Erasmus+ in 2016 and performed in collaboration with 14 foreign universities and organisations from Ireland, Germany, Slovakia, Russia, Kazakhstan and China. BIT is one of the Partner Universities in China.

The project’s aim is to develop and improve educational programs in information literacy and academic writing of students, young scientists and teachers in English. Working closely with the partners universities and organisation, BIT will participate in working groups and form local committee structures, to ensure the dissemination of project results and the implementation of project initiatives in Beijing Institute of Technology, in other Chinese universities and in society at large.  The project is led by School of Mechanical Engineering and BIT Library, and supervised by the Office of International Affairs of BIT.

From 8th to 12th May, the First Didactic and Scientific Working Group (DSWG) meeting and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Training were hold in School of Mechanical Engineering BIT. More than 30 representatives from 15 universities and organisations of 6 countries participated the meeting.

In the opening ceremony, Ms. Mao Yufeng, Project Manager of the Office of International Affairs of BIT, Prof. Xi Junqiang, Vice Dean of School of Mechanical Engineering addressed the welcoming speech, welcoming all representatives from partner universities. Mr. Zhang Xu, the project lead in BIT, announced the program of the meeting. The project leader from the grand holder, Limerick Institute of Technology, Ireland, introduced the project and meeting and training arrangement.

During the training, Eva Reid from Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Olga Safonkina from Ogarev Mordovia State University Russia, Gerard Cullen from TU-Dresden Germany, and Padraig Kirby from Limerick Institute of Technology, gave training in Multicultural communication, ESP fundamentals, Concepts and Terminologies in IL, Research methods in IL. In 11th and 12th May, the First Didactic and Scientific Working Group (DSWG) meeting was held, discussed the tasks assignments of partner universities, project need analysis, IL curriculum training program.

During the meeting, the EMI (English as Media of Instruction) expert Gerard Cullen from TU-Dresden also gave special training in Public English to the faculties from School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Management, School of Automation, and School of Electrics and Information Science, who are giving lectures in English. After training, Participants also visited the Library in Zhongguancun campus.

This meeting is the first working group meeting in this project after the Kick-Off meeting held in February 2017 in Petrovodask State University of Russia. The meeting was successfully end in 12th May.
